Well we knew spring had to arrive eventually, and it’s swinging in fast this May.
We’ve all been impatiently waiting for warmer weather, and it has arrived in abbreviated doses. With it are a lot of eager gardeners, condensing approximately 8 weeks of pre-garden season shopping into 3 weeks.
Our Garden Centre, Greenhouse and Tree & Shrub lot are already busy, with the first few truck loads delivering product in the last week and many more to come. What a treat, to finally be able to walk through the big blooms and colourful pots of annuals, hanging baskets and ready to plant vegetables.
New trees and shrubs look so green and lush against a slowly greening landscape, the dreaming has begun in earnest. All wish lists that have been added to all winter, will likely change now as new plants enter the reality picture. I cannot wait to get into my garden to start planting!
I’ve been poking around the garden, as I am sure many of you have, to discover lots of green emerging through cold soil, into the warming sun. It won’t be long for early spring blooms to herald their late arrival. Upon the last vestiges of snow melt, turf damage and nibbled bark are being exposed. Broken branches, clean up and container prep are suddenly at the forefront of spring activities. It’s also suddenly time to getting the patio ready for warm weather entertaining.
Early Spring Yard Care
We do need to be careful walking and working in still wet beds and lawns, as compacting your hard-earned soil or ripping too wet grass when raking with be damaging. Also maintain some caution with newly purchase greenhouse plants as they will still need to be hardened off to withstand our cool nights and sudden hot sunny days. Potatoes may have been bought, and a forgotten few bags of tulips have been discovered. Soil to be purchased, potted and get things planted are all on tap for the next week. And of course, the weeds are actively growing!
Mulching, amending soil, lawn care, building raised planters and gathering plant materials for containers and landscape will fill up the next three weeks to May Long Weekend. Along the way, no matter how long your list suddenly is, be sure to stop and enjoy our long-awaited garden season. We have many great sales coming up in May to kick off the season! Be sure to check them out and stop in for a visit. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing you!
