It was with very chilly fanfare on Friday, February 2nd that Balzac Billy did not see his shadow thus predicting an early spring.
After the last few day, we certainly hope so. Loads of snow, terrible roads and closures of the city’s major throughway have caused quite the speed bump to our pleas for spring. Regardless, it is sure to arrive at some point, and the engines are running as green thumbs everywhere are so ready to get growing!
The Garden Task List
Looking out into my own garden, I’m starting to see all the things I should have gotten done last fall but did not. Therefore, the garden task list is slowly being compiled (no point in rushing yet) and there are still several garden project dreams that I would love to get started this year. Many garden magazines, books, Pinterest boards and seed catalogues have been perused looking for new plants to add. Plans are ready for building raised vegetable gardens and the list goes on. Spring and garden season better come soon, the list is getting pretty long…
At Blue Grass Garden Centre seeds of all sorts have arrive, from microgreens, herbs, vegetables and flowers we have a great selection. Seeding trays, peat pots, grow lights, fertilizers and soils also lie in anticipation of early birds ready to get growing. Microgreens can be grown anytime; other seeds require some forethought as to the best time to get them going. Consider days to germinate and plant out dates in conjunction with our typical last frost date which is usually around the middle of May. Good light (easily supplemented by grow lights) and even moisture, along with good timing are essential for seeding success.
Valentine’s enters the picture this month and whether you love it or hate it, gifts of love will be everywhere. We have some great little Valentine’s pots of mini roses, cyclamen and kalanchoe as well as other great gifts for your loved one throughout the store. Garden décor, teddy bears, spring fashion and more, and if you’re still having trouble deciding, we have the ultimate gardener gift of a Blue Grass Gift Card that can be given now and used later in the garden season.
See You At The Calgary Home & Garden Show
As we continue to roll through February the garden energy will start to ramp up at Blue Grass. Trees and shrubs are being brought out of the cold to bring them out of dormancy for the upcoming Home and Garden Show displays. We’ll have a couple of booths there again this year, stop by and let’s chat about your garden plans. Our workshops committee have come up with some fun ideas for spring and they should be rolling out soon – stay tuned! And as we continue to get ready for spring, its time to clear out space, so enjoy our Garden Club Early Bird, Beat the Winter Blues Indoor Plant Discount and green up some spaces in your home. In March the sale will continue for all our shoppers and we’ll also have our annual Spring Cleaning Garage Sale for various home and garden décor items. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
